A series born under pressure

Under pandemic closure, Science Porter moved public science online. Shaping the Future, organised during Sayem Muhammad Nasratullah Sarkar's communications tenure (2020–2023), became flagship. Themes included genome editing, algal biofuel, speed breeding, vaccines, metabolic engineering, spirulina, CRISPR for agriculture, careers, and blue economy. Speakers spanned NRRI, ICGEB, UQ, Leeds, JIC, IRRI, Incepta, Khulna University, and advisors.

Public baselines: 170,000+ · 70+ countries. Qualitative lesson: audiences reward seriousness.

Seven lessons

  1. Hosting is discipline — local framing, live translation, inclusive Q&A.
  2. Themes as curriculum — sequence plant-science and public-health arcs.
  3. Advisors multiply trust — repay with accurate notes; never invent quotes.
  4. Frugal production can be dignified — audio, mobile slides, bilingual announcements, graphics pipeline.
  5. Archive or evaporate — structured speaker/date/theme records.
  6. Follow-up educates — mine chat FAQs into explainers quickly.
  7. Measure learning — quizzes, essays, journalist reuse, ambassador retention.

Closing

Keep the seriousness; lose the amnesia. Hybrid, archived, bilingual, biosafety-aware series are the sequel.

Field notes for practitioners in Bangladesh

Science communication teams here often operate with uneven internet, shared devices, exam calendars that devour volunteer time, and bilingual audiences who switch registers mid-conversation. Resilient habits include writing the one-sentence stake before the title; keeping a source shelf with primary papers and local expert contacts; running a pre-publish checklist (audience, claim, source, uncertainty, rumour landscape, call to action, conflict disclosure); debriefing after events for repeated questions and failed metaphors; and archiving speaker names, dates, and themes in structured records rather than Facebook memories alone.

Trust is a management outcome as much as a rhetorical one. A beautiful poster that cites nothing will lose to a plain paragraph that cites well. A viral clip that overclaims will cost months of seminar goodwill. The practitioners who last are the ones who treat accuracy as non-negotiable even when speed feels mandatory.

How this connects to Science Porter's programme pillars

Seminar supplies depth and named expertise — including the Shaping the Future international webinars. Workshop and training build human capacity so depth can be repeated without the original speaker in the room. Campaign carries messages into communities that may never join a livestream. Science Fest and competitions recruit curiosity at scale. Social works, such as winter cloth distribution documented in the photo gallery, remind neighbours that the organisation is present beyond content drops.

Cross-cutting themes — frugal science, biosafety and biosecurity, climate literacy, sustainable agriculture, public health, and anti-misinformation — should travel through all pillars. When siloed, the public hears contradiction. When coordinated, the public hears a worldview: science is for everyone, carefully explained, in languages people actually use.

Leadership and continuity

Founding Director Abdullah Mohammad Shohael, Ph.D., framed the organisation around public trust and climate-aware citizenship from November 2019 onward. Team Lead Sium Ahmed anchors the research wing's bridge between laboratory agendas and public understanding. Communications Manager Sayem Muhammad Nasratullah Sarkar (2020–2023) demonstrated how hosting, digital growth, and seminar production can scale under constraint. Advisors across IRRI, Cornell, The Sainsbury Laboratory, BSMRAU, BRRI/KGF networks, Farming Future Bangladesh, and professional societies widen the circle of accountability.

None of this requires fabricating awards or inventing quotations. The archived record is already ambitious enough. The next chapter belongs to students, journalists, scientists, and citizens who have not yet joined — people willing to explain hard things without contempt and without hype.

Science communication remains a long game: repeated contact, named sources, corrected errors, and programmes that show up in person as well as online. That is the standard Science Porter Bangladesh holds itself to as it continues to grow.
