About Science Porter Bangladesh

Taking good science from the laboratory to the streets.

Who we are

Science Porter Bangladesh (SPB) is a nonprofit science-communication platform founded in November 2019 by enthusiastic young people under the leadership of Abdullah Mohammad Shohael, Ph.D., Professor of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering at Jahangirnagar University.

Our purpose is simple and demanding: take good science out of the laboratory and onto the streets — educate people in their own language, and train them to understand and adopt scientific advances with confidence.

We exist to

  • Communicate science clearly and listen carefully
  • Create opportunities to learn the core of science — not slogans
  • Connect local audiences with outstanding scientists worldwide
  • Deliver updated, evidence-based messages in Bangla and English
  • Work with people of every profession across Bangladesh
  • Offer a platform for anyone who wants to contribute to public science

What we do

We translate scientific knowledge for general audiences through six programme pillars:

| Pillar | Focus | |--------|--------| | Seminar | Regular and international webinars — including the Shaping the Future series | | Workshop | Practical skills: design, video, storytelling for members and the public | | Training | Capacity building with skilled resource persons | | Campaign | Grassroots outreach for people with little prior science exposure | | Science Fest | Competitions, festivals, and celebration of curiosity | | Social works | Community service alongside science literacy (e.g., winter cloth distribution) |

Cross-cutting themes include frugal science, biosafety & biosecurity, climate and sustainable agriculture, public health, and fighting misinformation.

Impact at a glance

Across homepage, programme, and alumni records, Science Porter has engaged on the order of 170,000+ people in 70+ countries through online seminars and channels (some programme tallies cite 165,000 / 70+; communications-era seminar metrics reported higher cumulative attendance). We normalise public reporting to 170,000+ · 70+ unless citing a specific archived series.

Director's framing

Infodemic is harmful like a pandemic. Attainment of public trust can control misinformation — and science communication increases public trust by eliminating misleading information and wrong concepts. Our thinking is global though we act locally. We are determined to gather citizens as scientists, explore frugal ideas, and build a climate-aware nation.
